Abstract

GONZALEZ GUTIERREZ, Jorge. Income distribution in Mexico (2008-2020). Rev. econ. [online]. 2023, vol.40, n.100, pp.1-19.  Epub June 26, 2023. ISSN 2395-8715.  https://doi.org/10.33937/reveco.2023.305.

This document explores income distribution in Mexico from 2008 to 2020. For this, the main source of information is the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (ENIGH), which was adjusted using the National Accounts System. This information exposes a period of decrease in the labor share of income, accompanied by a notable increase in transfers. Likewise, the importance of adjusted surveys is highlighted, in issues such as the underestimation of income reported in the highest deciles throughout the study period in the ENIGH, in addition to the divergent trends of inequality with respect to adjusted data. In addition, here it is shown that the Gini Index has decreased, especially in the periods from 2008 to 2010, and from 2018 to 2020. This document shows that this trajectory is associated with income behavior of the highest deciles, as well as the evolution of social policy and remittances.

Keywords : distribution; income; transfers; remittances; Mexico.
