Abstract

MACIAS MACIAS, Alejandro  and  SEVILLA GARCIA, Yolanda Lizeth. Making alternative economies in a commercialized environment. The Pochtecatl marketplace in Jalisco, Mexico. Iztapalapa. Rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2023, vol.44, n.95, pp.101-133.  Epub Sep 11, 2023. ISSN 2007-9176.  https://doi.org/10.28928/ri/952023/aot1/maciasmaciasa/sevillagarciay.

The globalization of markets and neoliberal governments have led to the pauperization of living conditions among the working classes and popular groups. In this context, initiatives for alternative economies to the market, based on solidarity and reciprocity, have resurfaced. The Pochtecatl alternative economy flea market is an effort in southern Jalisco, Mexico that seeks to improve the care of nature, reaffirm community ties, and reclaim regional knowledge. This market has gone through different stages, facing challenges and mistakes, as well as reaffirming convictions among its actors. We conclude that efforts like this one are fundamental at the present time in order to revert the injustice and inequity that generates the hegemonic economic model. However, to achieve that such initiatives transcend from good wishes to effective and sustainable results, requires conviction and commitment from all actors regarding the challenges that their implementation represents.

Keywords : solidarity economy; reciprocity; nature; exchange; southern Jalisco.
