The state of Oaxaca is the state with the second greatest mammalian richness in the country, but it is not exempt from the pressures caused by human activities, such as population growth and over-utilization of natural resources, which have a negative impact on its biodiversity. This study records the diversity of mammals in a private conservation area (PCA), thereby demonstrating its importance as a relict of little altered vegetation and as a refuge for mammalian species in an area threatened by accelerated human activities. From February to October 2012, by means of Sherman and Havahart traps, mist nets and camera traps, the diversity of mammals during the dry and rainy season was estimated. A total of 30 species, 23 genera, nine families and six orders were recorded. In terms of diversity, there is a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the dry season (H'= 2.27) and the rainy season (H'= 2.12); however, regarding equitativity the dry season had a lower value (J'=0.70) compared to the rainy season (J'=0.74). Although the El Sagrado ranch PCA is not a large area, the number of documented species is relatively high. This paper is the first report about mammal diversity in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca and represents an important contribution to our knowledge of mammals in Oaxaca.
