Abstract

MARTINEZ-MENDOZA, Eduardo; MACIAS-VELASQUEZ, Sharon; MOLINA-RUIZ, Héctor Daniel  and  VERA-MARTINEZ, Paola Selene. The Invisible Path of Used Lubricants: Voices, Practices, and Institutional Gaps in Mechanical Workshops. Entreciencias: diálogos soc. conoc. [online]. 2025, vol.13, n.27, e2591570.  Epub Feb 05, 2026. ISSN 2007-8064.  https://doi.org/10.22201/enesl.20078064e.2025.27.91570.

Purpose:

This study aims to analyse the dynamics involved in the management and final disposal of used automotive lubricants, based on the perceptions of mechanical workshops.

Methodological design:

A mixed-methods approach was employed. Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted different mechanical workshops. The sample size was determined by the saturation of key analytical categories.

Results:

Although workshop personnel lack precise knowledge of the environmental and health impacts of used lubricants, they generally acknowledge that these substances are pollutants and pose risks to human health. Despite this gap in awareness, workshops expressed a willingness to adopt responsible waste management practices, provided they receive institutional support.

Research limitations:

As an exploratory study, the findings are preliminary. Further research should expand the scope of analysis to include other municipalities in the region and to engage additional stakeholders, such as waste collectors, regulators, and lubricant suppliers.

Findings:

There is no institutional plan for managing used lubricants, Current practices are fragmented, with minimal coordination among local actors. Automotive workshops need training programs to enhance their waste management practices.

Keywords : waste management; automotive lubricants; used lubricants; environmental attitudes; automotive workshops.
