EROZA SOLANA, Enrique y ZARCO MERA, Ángel. Drama, hopelessness and stigma: Convulsive crisis among tsotsil and tseltal mayans of Los Altos de Chiapas, Mexico. Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, pp.63-90. Epub 11-Oct-2024. ISSN 2007-7610. https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.iei.v9.n2.2024.a03.
This study examines the experiences of convulsive crisis among tsotsil and tseltal people, who are the predominant ethnic groups in Los Altos de Chiapas. The analysis is based on their personal narratives, and it explores the trajectories of both ill persons and their close caregivers. The study finds that the response of family and community members to the affected individual is influenced by the meaning conferred to the illness and the ill individual. The illness itself implies stigmatization and marginalization, which are further exacerbated by intersubjective processes and the meanings attributed to the convulsions. Additionally, structural dimensions such as poverty, racism, and the lack of institutional support to address health problems are also evident. Overall, the findings indicate that adverse outcomes for individuals experiencing recurrent convulsive crisis are heavily influenced by the interaction between structural and sociocultural factors.
