RUIZ LAGUIER, Verónica. Photography and ethnographic work The case of the Akateka community: La Gloria. Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, pp.35-62. Epub 11-Oct-2024. ISSN 2007-7610. https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.iei.v9.n2.2024.a02.
The following text arises from my visit in November 2021 to the Akateka community of La Gloria located in the municipality of La Trinitaria (Chiapas, México). Accompanied by the photographers José Ángel Rodríguez, Alanís Rodríguez and Pablo Farías of the Bats’i Lab collective, I had the opportunity to witness the arrival of the ashes of the activist priest Javier Ruiz, who founded the community integrated by displaced Guatemalans, almost 40 years ago. My objective is to provide an anthropological and historical context for the images captured during this unique religious event, as well as to offer a brief reflection on the relevance of photography as a historical heritage of the people. In addition, I intend to highlight the importance of photography as an ethnographic tool in my anthropological work, as it serves as a catalyst of collective memory. It is important to mention that my contribution is based on my experience as a social anthropologist and not as a specialist in visual media.
