Resumen

ANORVE ANORVE, Daniel; MENESES CARDENAS, Jorge  y  BALTAZAR ELISERIO, Irma. Journalistic gaps in the coverage of men’s and women’s soccer matches: UNAM Pumas teams. (2017-2022). Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, pp.5-34.  Epub 11-Oct-2024. ISSN 2007-7610.  https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.iei.v9.n2.2024.a01.

The media has the potential to boost, slow down or interfere with the growth and consolidation of soccer. In Mexico, the viability of Liga MX Femenil is largely conditioned by the coverage and visibility given to it by the media. The journalistic coverage is analyzed, taken from three mexican newspapers: ―Reforma, La Jornada and Gaceta UNAM― during six short tournaments (2017-2022), including the two professional teams of the first division (los pumas and ‘las pumas’): men and women’s Mexican soccer teams of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The findings suggest the existence of significant disparities, both in general coverage ―men versus women― and in specific coverage ―by newspapers and rivals.― The results obtained lead to the conclusion that there is no neutral or objective journalistic exercise. Recommendations are made to close the quantitative and qualitative gaps in order to consolidate and thus make both professional leagues viable
