ARIAS GUZMAN, Andrés Augusto. Governance, conflict and reproduction at the Intercultural University of Chiapas. Between multiculturalist neo-indigenism and the decolonial challenge. Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2024, vol.21, e202401. Epub 11-Oct-2024. ISSN 2007-7610. https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.iei.v21.2024.a01.
Based on an analysis of governance, the change of university presidents, and in the context of the internal union conflict at the Intercultural University of Chiapas (UNICH), this paper examines the discourses of university authorities and the collective actions of the unions to affirm that the institutional design and the legal and regulatory order of a university that defines itself as intercultural, tend to reproduce a multiculturalist neoindigenism. Through ethnographic work and interviews with key actors, it is argued that the initial efforts to generate an educational space and an innovative curriculum, towards a desired dialogue of knowledge, faced a local context anchored in indigenism and in the reproduction of the situation of racism, inequality and exclusion of the indigenous condition. The facts related in this article show the limited margins and the enormous institutional and legal barriers faced by the actors in the university in the face of a critical interculturality of decolonial inspiration.
