ZEBADUA CARBONELL, Juan Pablo y CHACON REYNOSA, Karla Jeanette. Fears and Corporealities: Culture and Bodies in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Chiapas. Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2023, vol.20, e202304. Epub 07-Oct-2024. ISSN 2007-7610. https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.iei.v20.2023.ea01.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in late 2019 and spread globally with mass lockdowns in early 2020, the primary objective of this text is to analyze how people incorporated confinement and health security measures implemented by countries around the world into their daily lives, with the purpose of mitigating the spread of the virus. It will also address how fears were expressed at the time in relation to a virus that has transformed societies as an unprecedented phenomenon in this century. To achieve this objective, a sociocultural discussion of local character in the state of Chiapas is proposed. This discussion is based on content analysis of various press and media sources, as well as informal conversations with inhabitants of the areas where some events took place. In these conversations, many people proposed communal responses rooted in varied cultural imaginaries and traditions to mitigate the fears that arose during the pandemic. This phenomenon has led to corporealities, bodies as receivers and embodiments, being presented as spaces of tension that allow us to understand the cultural strategies developed by social and cultural groups in response to these realities.
