KLINT, Ryan David. The impersonal voice in Mazatlán Mazatec. Cuad. Lingüíst. Col. Méx. [online]. 2026, vol.13, e367. Epub 20-Ago-2026. ISSN 2007-736X. https://doi.org/10.24201/clecm.v13.367.
Impersonal verbs in Mazatlán Mazatec (ISO 639-3: vmz, Glottolog: maza1296), an Otomanguean language spoken in the Cañada district of Oaxaca, are inflections of voice that contrast with Active Voice. Morphological and semantic evidence is presented to show that the contrast between Impersonal and Active Voice is inflectional rather than derivational in nature. This category is obligatory, it is expressed in every member of a particular lexical category, and its alteration is regular, with a compositional, predictable, and productive semantic. (Mel’čuk 1993: 2). The change in diathesis within the impersonal voice does not affect the structure of the semantic roles of the verb, as would occur in a derivation of a new lexeme; instead, it affects only the subject as a grammatical argument, suppressing its expression.
