Resumen
VILLA GONZALEZ, Alejandro. Why saints, kings, and philosophers always tell the truth. Reportative evidentiality and epistemic modality with “to say” in the 13th Century: analysis of the evidential subject. Cuad. Lingüíst. Col. Méx. [online]. 2026, vol.13, e364. Epub 20-Abr-2026. ISSN 2007-736X. https://doi.org/10.24201/clecm.v13.364.
Evidentialist studies of Spanish, with some exceptions, have focused on the current state of the language. The analysis in this paper provides information on the topic through the subject, the source of the report, and allows for outlining a more concrete overview of the interaction between evidentiality and epistemic modality in the early stages of Spanish. This work also aims to outline an attempt at early findings that can serve as a basis for comparison in the history of the language. The overall results suggest that the epistemic evaluation of reports is largely related to the evidential subject, the entity to whom the reported discourse belongs.
