LOPEZ ZURITA, Paloma. Bullfighting Vocabulary in Richard Ford’s Gatherings from Spain. Cuad. Lingüíst. Col. Méx. [online]. 2018, vol.5, n.2, pp.335-370. ISSN 2007-736X.

This article carries out the analysis of the bullfighting vocabulary used in Peninsular Spanish through its presence in the work Gatherings from Spain, published in 1846. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to determine which linguistic mechanisms of translation are used by the author to transfer from Spanish to English such a tremendously rooted in the Spanish cultural heritage lexical field as bullfighting is; on the other, to establish the relationship between the type of original vocabulary and the mechanism used, depending on whether it is a terminological element or whether it consists of general vocabulary and/or non-specific popular expressions which refer to the bull as a cultural reference. In many cases, the incorporation of these elements into the target language through integrated borrowings or xenisms is observed, given the impossibility of achieving an equivalent translation.

Palabras llave : Lexicology; translation mechanisms; cultural-specific items (CSIs); bullfighting; Richard Ford.
