Abstract

TORRES GARCIA, Alberto Francisco; BONCHEVA, Antonina Ivanova  and  CRUZ CHAVEZ, Plácido Roberto. The recent trade relations between Mexico and South Korea: analysis of the comparative advantages revealed. Méx.cuenca pac [online]. 2026, vol.15, n.43, pp.9-32.  Epub Feb 20, 2026. ISSN 2007-5308.  https://doi.org/10.32870/mycp.v15i43.959.

The figures for Mexican foreign trade reveal a pronounced dependence on the United States, a situation that is further exacerbated by the possibility of a unilateral increase in tariffs. This invites the exploration of partners with ample potential, such as the Republic of Korea (South Korea), both to diversify the flow of its exports and to promote industrial development and the attraction of investments. Based on the review of specialized literature and the obtaining of statistical data from official sources, this article determines the Revealed Comparative Advantage (VCR) in the exports of Mexico and South Korea, using the index proposed by Bela Balassa for the period between 2000 and 2023, highlighting five key years in the development of recent relations. The results suggest the possibility of implementing a Free Trade Agreement between both countries, promoting specialization, cooperation, and complementation in strategic sectors such as the automotive and electronics industries.

Keywords : Foreign trade; exports; revealed comparative advantages; competitiveness; cooperation.
