This essay inquiries into the main features of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, its origin, its reach in terms of geography, potential population coverage and global trade, as well as the uniqueness and similarities with other regional integration mechanisms for the Pacific Rim. After reviewing the state of the recent negotiation process, the analysis focused on two crucial issues for Mexico, namely, what is the geopolitical logic of Mexico’s participation in the TPP? Where the TPP stands within Mexico’s current development project and foreign policy? A concluding section balances optimist and pessimist prospects for Mexico’s participation in this trans-hemispheric future agreement.
