Abstract

LASCURAIN FERNANDEZ, Mauricio. Building a new paradigm of diversity in a globalized world. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2025, n.29, 00002.  Epub May 05, 2025. ISSN 2007-4964.  https://doi.org/10.55555/is.29.635.

Increasingly diverse societies demand new strategies for harmonious integration. Colorblindness and multiculturalism, two traditional approaches, have limitations. Colorblindness ignores differences, while multiculturalism can foster discrimination. Polyculturalism, which focuses on intergroup relations, offers an alternative, but its effectiveness is not universal. Globalization also impacts diversity. It can generate risks for coexistence, but it also offers opportunities for inclusion. The connection between both phenomena is complex and requires in-depth analysis. This article proposes a fourth dimension: the globalization diversity ideology, which emerges from the interaction between globalization and diversity. This ideology seeks to overcome the limitations of existing approaches and promote positive diversity that enriches all communities. To this end, we review empirical studies that show how globalization diversity can reduce discrimination and racism, and facilitate positive intergroup contact.
