Resumen

HURTADO GONZALEZ, Javier. The second electoral round in Latin America and its possible introduction in Mexico. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2020, n.19, pp.261-290.  Epub 25-Feb-2020. ISSN 2007-4964.

The analysis of the results of 55 presidential elections in Latin America between 1999 and 2019 seems to call into question the supposed effects and benefits of applying the second electoral round for governance and the legitimacy of rulers. In the case of Mexico, this international experience is compared to the only evidence we have for elections of rulers through a second round; namely, the federal government in the 19th century, and municipal elections in the state of San Luis Potosí in the 20th. The study concludes with proposals regarding the possible implementation of the second electoral round in Mexico.

Palabras llave : second round; governance; presidential elections; legitimacy.
