GARCIA BERISTAIN, Karla Andrea y CIENFUEGOS MARTINEZ, Yessica Ivet. Traces of Violence on Mental Health of Migrant Women from Guanajuato. Acta de investigación psicol [online]. 2023, vol.13, n.3, pp.90-99. Epub 03-Dic-2024. ISSN 2007-4719. https://doi.org/10.22201/fpsi.20074719e.2023.3.519.
Violence against women’s bodies is a driving force in migratory processes, in addition to the fact that taking place in a violent context can affect mental health (Barja, 2019; Petrzelová et al., 2015). The objective of the study was to identify the affectations to mental health reported by Guanajuato women whose experiences of internal and external migration were crossed by violence against women. Through semi-structured interviews, nine women talked about their personal experiences regarding the migration process, and its effects on their mental health. A phenomenological study was carried out that allowed structuring three categories of analysis: a) Pain in times of violence, b) Between support and revictimization, and c) Sometimes there must be land in between to heal. It was found that the effects on mental health were related to emotional, physical, cognitive, behavioral and relational symptoms and processes. The search for resources to improve their mental health led them to be misunderstood and revictimized. Consequently, migration meant an alternative to live in conditions far from violence, as a form of resistance and agency.
