Global climate change produces sudden changes in the distribution of species, populations and communities, generating a significant loss of biodiversity, which is also closely linked to deforestation. In Mexico, one of the plant formations most severely affected by deforestation is the tropical montane cloud forest, which is estimated to have lost 90 % of its original distribution. In response, efforts have been made to counteract deforestation by planting pine trees. Succession studies have shown that tropical montane cloud forests replace pine forests, which means that the latter can be used as natural facilitators in the reintroduction of tropical montane cloud forest species. Assisted migration can mitigate the effects of global climate change, and pine plantations have been reported to help reintroduce endangered species in tropical montane cloud forests at the intermediate and advanced successional stages. This article proposes a model of assisted migration of native tropical montane cloud forest plants using the many pine-tree plantations found in Mexico.
