ROSTRO DEL MURO, Karen Liliana; MORALES-GARCIA, Elizabeth Darinka; CASTRO-CASTRO, Arturo y MUNGUIA-LINO, Guadalupe. Riqueza, distribución y claves de identificación de la familia Gentianaceae en Nueva Galicia, México. Bot. sci [online]. 2024, vol.102, n.2, pp.616-634. Epub 04-Jun-2024. ISSN 2007-4476. https://doi.org/10.17129/botsci.3431.
Background:
Gentianaceae is represented by 18 genera and 90 species in Mexico. The genus Geniostemon and 46 species are endemic. The family is included in taxonomic treatments and floristic lists of various states and regions of Mexico, however, the Nueva Galicia region lacks a review for the group.
Questions:
How many and which genera and species of the Gentianaceae family are there in Nueva Galicia? What are their ecological and phenological characteristics of Gentianaceae in the study area?
Study species:
Gentianaceae family.
Study site and dates:
Nueva Galicia, 2018-2022.
Methods:
The work was carried out in five phases: 1) obtaining the species preliminary list, 2) consultation of herbarium specimens, 3) elaboration of data matrix from the information on the labels of herbarium specimens, 4) exploration and collection in the field, and 5) information analysis.
Results:
In Nueva Galicia, Gentianaceae is represented by nine genera, 25 species, and two varieties. It concentrates its greatest diversity in humid sites of temperate forests, in an elevation range of 1,500-2,500 m. Gentianaceae blooms and/or fructify throughout the year, but more taxa with reproductive structures were found in October and November.
Conclusions:
The richness of Gentianaceae found positions Nueva Galicia as the zone of greatest diversity of this family concerning other floristic projects in Mexico.
