Abstract

It is important to understand the reproductive characteristics of captured organisms for commercialization. Centropomus robalito is a significant coastal species that is commercialized along the Mexican Pacific shore. This study aims to determine several reproductive features of the species, including length distribution, and sex ratio, to provide information on gonadal development through microscopic analysis. The organisms were obtained monthly from commercial fishing operations in the Chautengo Lagoon, Guerrero state. Fish were measured and weighed, while gonads and liver were also removed and weighed. Gonads were preserved in neutral formalin and processed for histological analysis to identify the degree of gonadal maturity and sex. A total of 330 organisms were sampled, with an average total length of 19.7 cm (± 0.09) and an average total weight of 75.3 g (± 0.79). More females (61.2 %) were captured than males (38.8 %). The best-represented stage of maturity in both sexes was immature. Oocytes exhibit asynchronous development, and cell arrangement in the testis is lobular. No specific reproductive period of the species was identified, as the values of the gonadosomatic index and stages of gonadal maturation did not show a clear trend and significant variation during the sampling year. The growth of the organisms was negatively allometric. It is concluded that commercial capture is primarily directed towards immature fish, which can adversely affect future reproduction and may indicate overexploitation of C. robalito.
