Resumen

BARROSO-TANOIRA, Francisco-Gerardo. Motives for voluntary exmatriculation of students in degree courses in private higher education institutions: A study of the mexican southeast. Rev. iberoam. educ. super [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.14, pp.19-40. ISSN 2007-2872.

Definitive voluntary exmatriculation of students can be due to a variety of factors, However, in private higher education institutions (IES) said exmatriculation normally is attributable to financial problems of the students or their academic level after preparatory school. The study was performed with students from four private IES in Merida Yucatan, Mexico, of the medium-high socioeconomic level. The results show that contrary to what people normally think, the economic factor was not the most important one for voluntary definitive exmatriculation of the students but the lack of support by tutors, school authorities and professors (organizational support) which translated into poor academic performance, failed subjects, lack of vocational orientation and insufficient adjustment to the environment in the case of non-local students.

Palabras llave : higher education; student performance; dropout; private education.
