Community tourism is an option for economic and social development in Mexico for rural areas inhabited by indigenous people. It is productive undertakings with active involvement of communities in the management and distribution of the benefits occur in their local context. This paper aims to explain the principles of use and management of common property from the practice of community tourism. In order to identify the cases registered in the national context, is emphasized in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, where are located references for understanding and performance of community institutions and forms of governance of natural and cultural assets in this segment.
