The Dry plate technique, which allowed the capture of movement in photography for the first time in history and was one of the elements that led to the invention of cinema, arrived in Mexico in November 1880. The capture of fleeting moments was called instantaneous photography. This article analyzes a set of the oldest photographs found to date, capturing a dynamic situation at the precise moment was a priority in these images. Amateur photographers took these images, or there is a high probability that they did; they captured everyday scenes, local spectacles, and festive occasions of regional character. The photographs are preserved by Fototeca Antica, A.C., Fototeca Romualdo García at the Museo Regional de Guanajuato “Alhóndiga de Granaditas”, and Fototeca Nacional of Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. The study reveals the new themes and particularities of instantaneous photography taken on in Mexico, amateur photographers experimented with regional issues at a definitive moment in transforming the visible as part of configuring a modern aesthetic of photography in this country.
