The present essay analyzes Boghossian’s critique of Relativism and Constructivism, especially the Relativism of Epistemic Justification, as presented by Richard Rorty using the particular case of the dispute between Galileo and Bellarmino. In general, this critique is positively appraised, but, on the basis of Galileo’s historical case, there is an attempt to expose a biased and misguided reading of Bellarmino’s position, which does not pay enough attention to the historical context, as a relativist would demand. As a conclusion it is defended that rational universality implies also be attentive to historical circumstances.
