Abstract

MOSCOSO, María Fernanda. Dragones, sacerdotes y magas: Lengua, escuela y migración en Alemania. Migr. desarro [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.23, pp.129-149. ISSN 1870-7599.

The aim of this article is to present an analysis of the discourse of a group of children and their Ecuadorian migrant parents around the role of language in primary school life in Germany. During the fieldwork period (2007-2009), 30 autobiographical interviews were performed. The key conclusions are that 1) children's discourse did not show a clear connection between study and family social ascension, since from an early age they have been subjected to intensive selection processes, and 2) parents see the learning of the German language as important for their children, although they also believe that this implies a kind of loss; they see the language as something that has negative repercussions for their children's scholastic achievement; they think that the German language plays an educative and adaptive function, but also has repercussions in the family sphere and believe that the language is a barrier that impedes the ability to properly fulfill the responsibilities imposed upon them by the German education system.

Keywords : migration; families; language; school; socialization linguistics.
