Abstract

GOMEZ AIZA, Laura  and  ZURIA, Iriana. Records of the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in the city of Pachuca, Hidalgo, and evidence of reproductive activities. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.146-150. ISSN 1870-7459.

We report recent sightings of the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), an invasive bird, in the city of Pachuca, Hidalgo. In 340 hours of observation on the flowers of the maguey pulquero, Agave salmiana, during four years (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010), we registered 502 visits of the European Starling. The number of visits increased in the last two years, and in 2010 we observed courtship behavior and visits of juveniles. Our data suggest that the species is establishing in the city.

Keywords : invasive species; urban ecology; urban-adapter species; cavity-nesting birds.
