Abstract

POMA, Alice. Climate change and environmental activism: The role of attachment to the place. Tla-melaua [online]. 2019, vol.13, n.46, pp.212-237.  Epub Oct 02, 2020. ISSN 2594-0716.  https://doi.org/10.32399/rtla.0.46.573.

Climate change has humans in a dilemma: acting by questioning their relationship with the environment, or continuing with the actual model of development, to later adapt to the consequences of climate change. Behind the decision taken, there will be not only economic reasons and consumption habits, but also human emotions that influence on how this problem is solved.

This article analyzes the role of the affective bond with the place of origin. This bond is seen as an emotion that can influence the commitment towards saving the environment. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the literature that studies the role of attachment to the place of origin in response to climate change. To what extend attachment plays a role in the commitment to save the environment at the local and global levels. It will show the struggles of a particular group that is defending water rights in Mexico City.

Keywords : Emotions; attachment to the place; pro-environmental behaviors; climate change.
