GOMEZ, Mario; CIARRETA, Aitor e ZARRAGA, Ainhoa. Energy consumption, economic growth and trade: A causality analysis for Mexico. EconoQuantum [online]. 2018, vol.15, n.1, pp.53-72. ISSN 2007-9869. https://doi.org/10.18381/eq.v15i1.7112.
This paper analyses the relationship between energy consumption, economic growth and foreign trade in Mexico over the period 1971-2013, incorporating structural changes and using capital and labour as control variables. The results show that there are five long-run relationships between variables when exports are included and four with imports. There is a two-way causality between energy consumption and economic growth between imports and economic growth, and one way from exports to GDP. This implies that imports and exports boost economic growth, and the need to promote the production and use of cleaner energy.
