Abstract

DIAZ PEDROZA, Araceli Dennise  and  VILLAGOMEZ VALDES, Gina Irene. Fulfilling with the Objective. Voices of Older Women who Cared for Elderly Relatives with Chronic Degenerative Diseases in Mérida, Yucatán. Península [online]. 2024, vol.19, n.2, pp.61-85.  Epub Oct 08, 2024. ISSN 1870-5766.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cephcis.25942743e.2024.19.2.89177.

Women who provide care within families do not make up a homogeneous group. A large proportion of the physical and mental burden of daily life falls on them, even puts them in more vulnerable positions. Although they have a longer life expectancy than men, the conditions in which they live their own old age are uncertain. In this sense, the present qualitative work, which adheres to an interpretative framework through in-depth interviews and participant observations, aims to make visible the story of three elderly women who took on the responsibility to care for family members with chronic degenerative diseases in Mérida, Yucatán, and how this work has impacted their lives and aging processes. This allows the creation of narratives that anticipate unequal designations, tensions and the unseen costs for those who, while getting older, dedicated their lives to sustaining others.

Keywords : old age; gender; organization; unpaid care.
