Abstract

Historically, the Dominican Republic has been a migration space. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the Arabs were one of the groups that settled in the country where they dabbled into several sectors. They made used of various mechanisms to get inserted into Dominican society, including politics. The article pretends to analyze the participation of these immigrants and their descendants in Dominican politics between 1950 and 2020. By using sources from the Archivo General de la Nación, Junta Central Electoral and the Archivo Histórico de Santiago, it is studied their performance in politics, their participation in leftist groups and how they ascended to reach the presidency of the Republic, and some of them became part of the national political elite.
