GOMEZ-OLIVER, Luis. The world food crisis and its incidence in México. agric. soc. desarro [online]. 2008, vol.5, n.2, pp.115-141. ISSN 1870-5472.
During the first trimester of 2006, a period of six years of stability in food prices in México ended, which had previously only been interrupted by the, relatively moderate, increases at the end of 2004. During the second semester of 2006, the first appreciable increases in food prices took place, and, since september, increases intensified, culminating with the elevation of tortilla prices in January of 2007. During the last two years, from June 2006 to June 2008, while the general price index for consumers increased 9.4%, the average increase in food was 17.0%. By the end of May 2008, the President of the Republic announced 19 measures to be taken in order to face the food crisis, covering three central themes: i) fostering access to international products at the best possible price, ii) promoting food production, iii) protecting the income of poor families.
