MORALES RAMIREZ, María Ascensión. Self-employed workers: their inclusion in social security in Mexico. Rev. latinoam. derecho soc [online]. 2025, n.40, pp.277-299.  Epub 28-Abr-2025. ISSN 2448-7899.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iij.24487899e.2025.40.19296.

Informality stemming from the inability of economies to create productive jobs, changes in the world of work, and the disruption by technology have led to a rise in the number of categories of “independent workers”. It has always been challenging to implement policies and strategies for the inclusion of this sector in social security because it comprises a heterogenous group with a wide range of occupations and incomes. Now, the ever-changing state of employment has created a gray area that further complicates addressing the issue in the spheres of labor and social security. Providing for the social and labor environment has made it necessary to design and reformulate schemes to ensure social protection for the so-called “independent workers,” especially in view of their exponential growth resulting from the impact of technology. However, the measures adopted have come at the expense of scaling down the general mandatory regime Within the framework, this paper analyzes the State interventions Mexico has recently implemented to address the protection of this sector of the population.

Palavras-chave : independent workers; social security; informality; technology impact.
