The author analyzes the current situation of life imprisonment in the world through international practice and shows that no uniform concept exists on this sanction nor is there a homogeneous practice on the issue. For these purposes, the author refers to international practice as evidenced through national legislation of several States as well as the provisions in bilateral and multilateral extradition treaties. This evidences the tensions that may exist on extradition issues between States that allow life imprisonment and those who expressly prohibit it or that in fact do not apply it by setting maximum prison terms.
