Abstract

BORTOLAMEDI GARCIA, Gabriela; STEPHEN KECK, Charles  and  FREYERMUTH ENCISO, Graciela. Women who Gestate and Birth Themselves: Reproductive Experiences as Embodied Learning Processes. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2025, vol.20, e762.  Epub May 30, 2025. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2025.v20.762.

This article explores women’s reproductive experiences as embodied learning processes, while also examining the impact of social class on these experiences. Using a qualitative methodology with a biographical-narrative approach, it analyzes the stories of eight women from lower, middle, and upper social classes, all of whom are mothers of two children and reside in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. The findings reveal that the knowledge gained during the first pregnancy significantly shapes the experience of the second, and that this embodied learning process is deeply influenced by socioeconomic conditions. Overall, the results highlight the diversity of reproductive experiences and underscore the need for sensitive, personalized care, as well as the importance of addressing inequalities that affect access to information and decision-making during pregnancy and childbirth.

Keywords : reproductive experiences; pregnancy; childbirth; socioeconomic conditions; social class.
