CLAPS ARENAS, Ma. Eugenia. El siglo de Lafayette and its Discourse on Mexico. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2017, vol.12, n.24, pp.23-42. ISSN 1870-4115. https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2017.24.310.
This article approaches The Lafayette Century (El siglo de Lafayette) (1831-1832), one of Guatemala’s weeklies that circulated and supported the first months of the Mariano Gálvez’s administration as the political head of Guatemala (1831-1838). The discourse regarding Mexico that appears in its pages is highlighted, given the importance of relations between Mexico and Central America. As a result of this research, we identified in this Guatemalan publication significant distrust of the administration of the Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lucas Alamán, as well as opposition to the Jalapa Plan (December 4, 1829), a movement that opened the way for the administration of Anastasio Bustamante-Lucas Alamán in Mexico from 1830 to 1832. The weekly also demonstrated conviction that this administration had helped the Salvadoran, Manuel José Arce, in his attempt to regain power in Central America during those years.
