Abstract

MONROY SANCHEZ, Ricardo  and  BACA TAVIRA, Norma. Producers and Products that Provide Territorial Identity in the Market-tianguis of Ixtlahuaca, Estado de México. Región y sociedad [online]. 2025, vol.37, e2024.  Epub Feb 15, 2026. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2025/37/2024.

Objective: To characterize the producer-product-consumer relationship prevailing in the Ixtlahuaca market-tianguis, to make visible products with territorial identity in the rural-agricultural context. Methodology: Qualitative, conducting fieldwork from 2023 to 2024, interviewing consumers, sellers, and producers. Results: It was found that corn, squash, squash blossoms, huitlacoches, and beans are agricultural products with territorial identity because consumers fully identify them, and they can also count for the production season, which is what gives them a symbolic value to acquire them. Value: Empirical contribution to the debate on the study of tianguis markets. Limitations: the results found are exclusive to the region. Conclusions: The territorial identification of agricultural products offered in a tianguis market occurs when people go to purchase them because they are a basic component of the population's diet.

Keywords : market-tianguis; territorial identity; commerce; producers.
