CHAVEZ GALLARDO, Celia e ALMONTE, Leobardo de Jesús. Public Investment in Mexico. A Regional Growth Accounting Analysis, 2005-2022. Región y sociedad [online]. 2025, vol.37, e2013. Epub 15-Fev-2026. ISSN 2448-4849. https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2025/37/2013.
Objective: This article analyzes the role of public investment in the economic growth of Mexico's regions from 2005 to 2022. Methodology: A neoclassical production function, expanded by public investment, was estimated using panel data. Results: The results show that public investment has not had a significant effect on regional growth. Value: The study provides empirical evidence that allows to identify the contribution of public investment as an engine of regional growth, considering the structural disparities between entities. Limitations: Institutional quality in the execution of public investment is not addressed. Conclusions: Public investment has been insufficient to drive regional growth in Mexico. Its effect is marginal or negative in almost all regions, except in the northern border region, where it is positive. This suggests that its strategic allocation should be rethought to reduce regional disparities and improve the efficiency of territorial development.
