Abstract
TORRE CANTALAPIEDRA, Eduardo and LUNA HUILOTL, Dulce María. Residential Trajectories of Central American Refugees in Mexico: Obstacles to Accessing an Adequate Housing. Región y sociedad [online]. 2025, vol.37, e2020. Epub Feb 15, 2026. ISSN 2448-4849. https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2025/37/2020.
Objective: To analyze the residential trajectories of Central American refugee applicants and refugees in the city of Tapachula (Mexico) and the obstacles they face in accessing housing. Methodology: Based on interviews with ten migrants, their residential trajectories are reconstructed and analyzed to account for the barriers they encounter in accessing adequate housing. Results: refugee applicants and refugees not only encounter obstacles similar to those of low-income migrants but also face the difficulties arising from their refugee status. Value: The article offers a unique perspective on the residential integration of refugees in Mexico. Limitations: The results are not generalizable, but they are transferable to other cases of migrants with similar characteristics and circumstances. Conclusions: The combined effect of all these obstacles considerably hinders both their residential integration and integration into Mexico.
