Abstract
TEXIS FLORES, Michelle; SAAVEDRA LEYVA, Rafael Eduardo and CAMPOS BRAVO, Ilse Berenice. Female Entrepreneurship as a Labor Decision in Mexico. The Case of the Northern Border. Región y sociedad [online]. 2023, vol.35, e1791. Epub Mar 01, 2024. ISSN 2448-4849. https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2023/35/1791.
Objective: Determining the particularities of the women´s labor decision and their status as entrepreneurs in the northern border and in the resto of the country. Methodology: The data from the 2019, 2020, and 2021 National Occupation and Employment are used to estimate discrete choice, logit, and probit models. Results: a differentiated women’s education level effect is observed: higher education increases female labor insertion probability but decreases the entrepreneurial activity. On the other hand, age, number of children and a cohabitation relationship encourage entrepreneurship. Limitations: The results correspond to 2019-2021 period in México and its northern border region. It would be convenient to compare women labor decisions in another period and region. Value: This work supposes a contribution to the characteristics of female entrepreneurship. Conclusion: The figure of a female entrepreneur is linked to business motivated by necessity rather than market opportunity, but it is highlighted its social value in a context of economic instability.
