Objective: to analyze the association among sociodemographic, reproductive, and lifestyle variables with obesity and abdominal obesity in adult non-pregnant women living in Hermosillo, Sonora. Methodology: a representative random, cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted in 2005 to gather information from women aged 25 to 54 years (n=1 239). Results: The prevalence of general obesity) was 39.8% (confidence interval [CI] 95%, 37.1%-42.6%), while abdominal obesity (waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference) were 56.3% (95% CI, 53.5%-59.1%). and 62.9% (95% CI, 60.1%-65.6%), respectively. Overall, obesity had a positive association with age and was inversely associated with education. The marital status and the use of tobacco were associated with abdominal obesity. In this study, leisure-time physical activity was the only variable associated with the three types of obesities showing a protective effect. Value: the population-based study and the usage of objective metrics of obesity. Conclusions: against the backdrop of the growing trend of obesity in the region, data showed a high incidence of general and abdominal obesity among adult women in Hermosillo and the protective role of physical activity.
