Environmental governance is a particular kind of governance in which environmental issues achieve great relevance for public policies-making. The idea of "good environmental governance" implies a perspective of co-responsibility, as well as a commitment to protecting the environment on the part of government and society This essay examines the question of environmental governance in Mexico, in particular the case of the handling of hazardous waste. It concludes that Mexico's environmental governance is as yet unsatisfactory; therefore, in order to make progress toward higher levels, it proposes to face up to three challenges. These are, one, co-responsibility and commitment to protecting the environment; two, reform of institutions in charge of related issues; and three, a reflection on the role of expert knowledge as something superior to the ordinary people's knowledge.
