In this article, I reflect on individual decisions regarding ethical and methodological stances surrounding the recovery of the voices of victims in studies of violent events in Mexico-particularly in contexts of extended and ongoing violence. First, I present a case of a violent event I analyzed in Mexico relying exclusively on available secondary sources of victims’ voices. Then, drawing on theoretical and methodological insights, I suggest how we can chronicle victims voices in other cases by drawing on existing secondary sources. Finally, I reflect on the questions that guided this article: how can we reconstruct victims voices using secondary sources? Should victims voices be the primary source in violence studies? How can we engage critically with these voices when using data gathered by other researchers, rather than interviews we conduct ourselves?
