Abstract
ROSILES-SALAS, Javier. The Metropolitan Zones of Mexico: Between Centralization, Fragmentation and Political Pluralism. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2018, vol.14, n.27, pp.93-116. Epub Jan 27, 2025. ISSN 1870-3569.
The study of metropolitan zones as units of political-electoral analysis is practically non-existent in Mexico. Until now, a vision based on the traditional delimitation of political territories (country, state, municipality) has been maintained, and these areas require a different rethink of space. Once this absence is identified, this article reports on the weight of political parties in metropolitan areas and considers variables such as population density, type of municipality, geographical location and electoral participation. One more contribution is the proposal of an index that allows to compare the Mexican metropolitan zones in spite of the ample differences that present, since they can be form with one and up to 76 municipalities.
Keywords : Metropolitan zones; metropolitan areas; political parties; local governments; metropolitan government.
