Abstract
ZUNIGA, Víctor and HERNANDEZ-LEON, Rubén. An Ambivalent Embrace: The Reception of Children of Mexican Immigrants in the Schools of Georgia. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.25, pp.81-104. Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1870-3569.
Authors of this article participated as professionals and researchers in a ten-year research/action binational project named The Georgia Project (1997-2007). This project was born as an agreement of collaboration between universities in Monterrey and school districts in the state of Georgia. The focus of the analysis is to examine the role played by the schools, principals, teachers in the process of integrating (or not integrating) immigrants and their families in a region impacted by a sudden immigration from Mexico. As a result of the arrival of Mexican workers, the school enrollment was dramatically transformed. Thus, the paper focuses on the political role of the schools, and shows the ambivalent position educators and administrators have about newcomers.
Keywords : migration Mexico/USA; politics of integration; Georgia; new destinations of Mexican immigration.
