Abstract

TRIPIER, Pierre. Nicolas Machiavelli. A Central and Visionary Proto-Sociology: The Prince Sociologist, Artisan of the Nation-State. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.25, pp.55-80.  Epub Jan 20, 2025. ISSN 1870-3569.

Analyzing the work of Machiavelli, this article aims to show a new dimension of this multicited and multifaceted author. We argue that, since the beginning of the XIV century, Machiavelli developed a kind of pragmatic proto-sociology conceived as a tool for politicians. Using the methods of historical analysis and the study of war strategies, the Machiavelli invited ruling classes to design governments according to the people’s needs. In these terms, Machiavelli might be deemed as social scientists while he will continue being the prototype of an adviser of the Prince.

Keywords : Machiavelli; war strategies; historical analysis; government.
