Abstract

ZELIKOVICH, Julieta. The Multilateral Trade Regime in the Times of the ‘XXI Century Regionalism’: Five Scenarios for the Emerging Agenda. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2016, vol.12, n.23, pp.85-103.  Epub Jan 24, 2025. ISSN 1870-3569.

Within the GATT-WTO, the negotiating function has been for years one of the main attractions of the multilateral trade regime. However, the paralysis of the Doha Round, in addition to the development of trade, and the importance acquired by the regionalism have challenged the effectiveness of this function, questioning the centrality of the WTO itself. Taking these elements into consideration in this article we aim to identify the core of the agendas of some preferential trade negotiations selected as representative of the “XXI century regionalisms” (Baldwin, 2011) and to analyze their convergence and divergence with the multilateral trading system, proposing five possible scenarios.

Keywords : WTO; Trade Negotiations; Megaregional agreements; TPP; TTIP.
