Abstract

FARIAS PENA, Juan Paul. From White House to Black House: United States' Presidential Election in 2008. ¿Ascendent Social Mobility?. CONfines relacion. internaci. ciencia política [online]. 2009, vol.5, n.9, pp.11-22. ISSN 1870-3569.

The aim of this article is to present a sociological interpretation of the 2008 presidential election in the United States. It suggests that the victory of the democrat Barack Obama, can be analyzed by the conceptual framework of social mobility. The historical-ideological context in which the American dream has emerged and has been transformed; an empirical analysis that reflects the weakening of this model of social mobility, and the role played by ethic minorities, the youth, the women and the working class in this electoral process, represent clues that can help us to build this interpretation.

Keywords : United States; presidential election; social mobility; American dream.
