Resumen

GAITAN CEPEDA, Luis A et al. COVID-19 and the dentist. An integral review. Rev. Odont. Mex [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.4, pp.207-215.  Epub 26-Mayo-2025. ISSN 1870-199X.

In December 2019, in the city of Wuhan, China, a series of patients diagnosed with atypical pneumonia of probable viral origin were reported. The causal agent, a betacoronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, has infected more than one million people, and more than 65,000 patients have died from the disease (COVID-19). Because the primary route of contagious for SARS-CoV-2 is through saliva drops and nasal fluids, the dentist is constantly exposed to this infectious agent. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between the oral mucosa and SARS-CoV-2, this report aims to make a current and comprehensive review of the SARS-CoV-2/dental surgeon/oral mucosa relationship, including the possibility that SARSCoV-2 can infect the oral mucosa (oral infection). As long as new guidelines for clinical management, sterilization, infection control, and management of infectious biological waste are available to the dental community, the responsibility for pandemic control rests with each of us through our professional and personal actions.
