Abstract

This paper aims to explain the way of life among the elite of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico during the Porfiriato, from three aspects of material culture: housing, food and clothing. It starts from the idea that commercial activity helped modernity, understood as the change in consumption patterns that became a new cultural behavior in the lifestyles of wealthier social sectors, distinguished by their luxury and comfort, which was taken from the French capital, considered the symbol of universal culture. The strategy to promote that change was focused on the architectural design of the buildings, particularly, in the departmental organization of these commercial sites and the advertisements in the local press.
