The aim of this work was the design and implementation of a program for collection and systematic classification of non-useful drug products in a tertiary care hospital, in order to know the system weakness derived from medication management and use flaws. The program comprised three stages. During the design stage, 58% of the health care providers from the hospital were sensitized, and the areas that mainly produced non-useful drug products were characterized. During implementation, non-useful drug products were collected, representing 13% of the medication expenses for the hospital approximately. The health care quality of the hospital improved, as expressed by 99.12% of the hospital staff that evaluated the program.
